Double Chance

A soccer wager covering two of three results (home/draw, away/draw, or home/away) — lower variance traded for lower odds.

A double chance bet lets you cover two of the three possible results in a soccer match with a single wager. Standard three-way soccer betting offers three options: home win, away win, or draw. A double chance bet fuses two of those three into one selection: home or draw (1X), away or draw (X2), or home or away (12). By covering two outcomes rather than one, you raise your win probability but accept reduced odds in exchange.

Double chance betting appeals to bettors who favor one side yet want insurance against the draw, which occurs in roughly 25 to 30 percent of soccer matches. Instead of committing the full stake to a single outcome, the double chance format supplies a safety net for conservative bettors or for fixtures with uncertain projections.

The trade-off is explicit: because your win probability is higher, the payout is markedly lower than a standard three-way bet. The odds reflect the combined probability of the two covered outcomes. In heavily lopsided fixtures, the home or draw option can carry very short odds, yielding minimal profit.

Example

Manchester United is playing at home against a mid-table opponent. The three-way odds are: Manchester United to win at -130, the draw at +240, and the away team to win at +400. You are reasonably confident United will win but want insurance against a draw. You place a $100 double chance bet on “Home or Draw” (1X) at -300 odds. If United wins or the match ends in a draw, you win. Your $100 bet returns $33.33 in profit. Only an outright away win costs you the $100 stake. You exchanged higher profit potential for a much higher win probability.

Key Points

  • Covers two of three outcomes: Double chance bets merge two results into one wager — home/draw, away/draw, or home/away.
  • Lower odds, higher win probability: Covering two outcomes sharply reduces the odds relative to a standard three-way bet.
  • Protection against the draw: The most common application is backing a team while insuring against the frequent draw in soccer.
  • Primarily a soccer market: Double chance is offered almost exclusively for soccer, owing to the three-way structure of match results in that sport.
  • Useful for cautious bettors: Double chance suits bettors who want to lower variance and will accept smaller returns for greater consistency.
