How to Use This Calculator

  1. Input your stake per part (the combined outlay is computed as 2× this figure)
  2. Input the win odds assigned to your selection
  3. Set the number of places being offered on the market
  4. Set the place fraction applied to the odds (1/4 or 1/5)
  5. Review computed returns and profit across the win, place-only, and unplaced scenarios

Formula

Total Stake = Unit Stake × 2 (one part for win, one for place)

Place Odds = (Win Decimal Odds - 1) / Fraction + 1

Win Return = (Stake × Win Odds) + (Stake × Place Odds)

Place Return = Stake × Place Odds

Win Profit = Win Return - Total Stake

Place Profit = Place Return - Total Stake

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an each-way bet structured?

An each-way bet bundles two distinct wagers: a win bet and a place bet. When the selection wins, both components settle as winners. When it merely places (finishes within the qualifying top positions) without winning, only the place component returns. The place leg settles at a fraction of the win odds.

How should I interpret 1/4 odds versus 1/5 odds?

That fraction is the multiplier applied to the win odds to derive place returns. Under 1/4 terms, the place leg settles at one quarter of the win odds; under 1/5 terms, at one fifth. As a worked case, win odds of 10/1 at 1/4 yield place odds of 10/4 = 5/2.

How many places does each-way betting pay?

The count is event-specific. Horse racing generally settles 2-4 places, with handicap races extending further. The bookmaker defines both the number of places and the applicable fraction for each individual event.

Does each-way betting offer good value?

Each-way betting can deliver strong value when a selection carries a high probability of placing despite long win odds. Longshots with solid place credentials are prime each-way candidates, particularly under generous place terms.
